Fans of Jennifer E. Smith’s ‘This Is What Happy Looks Like’ will enjoy this Cinderella retelling. Through dual POV’s, Ashley has written an engaging story that has a creative spin on the Cinderella that all of us know and love.
Danielle, aka Elle, is a character that all fangirls can relate to. She loves Starfield, and knows everything there is to know about it. The fandom linking her to both her late father and mother made the story more heartfelt. I liked seeing how Elle’s friendship with her coworker, Sage, developed, and her texting relationship with Darien as well. The con reminded me of the books ‘Queens of Geek’ by Jen Wilde and ‘All the Feels’ by Danika Stone! The food truck being named the Magic Pumpkin was a nice way of inserting more references to Cinderella.
Elle’s step family drove me insane. Cal isn’t as bad, and she has a pretty decent story arc but Camille and Chloe were absolutely dreadful. Really reminiscent to the original! The book in general reminded me a bit of the Disney Channel movie, Another Cinderella Story starring Selena Gomez. I also loved the title — Geekerella is such a great creative spin!
I liked the dual POV, because we got to see Darien’s view, which is a view that obviously isn’t shown in the original Cinderella. Making Darien an up and coming actor made the story more interesting and modern while still keeping with the Cinderella theme. His relationship with Gail, his handler was portrayed well and they have a strong friendship. I only wish we knew who she was texting!
Overall, this book was an enjoyable read and I most likely will reread it at some point! I’m a sucker for Hollywood stories, and this one has that element along with a great female lead. I loved it! Go ahead and buy this book; you won’t regret it!
