Ocean breeze in her hair and sand between her toes, Anise can’t wait to spend the summer before her senior year surfing and hanging out on the beach with friends. Santa Cruz is more than her home-it’s her heart. But when her aunt, a single mother, is in a serious car accident, Anise must say goodbye to California to help care for her three young cousins.
Landlocked Nebraska is the last place Anise wants to be. Sure, she loves her family, but it’s hard to put her past behind her when she’s living in the childhood house of the mother who abandoned her. And with every Instagram post, her friends back home feel further away.
Laura Silverman creates a relatable, thought-provoking summer read with just the right balance of family, friendship, and romance.
Readers can’t help but sympathize with Anise; who would be excited about having to leave their friends for the entire summer before a lot of them leave for college or elsewhere? Her struggle with communication plagues her throughout the book, but it’s understandable why she has a hard time connecting with her friends from so far away when she’s never experienced that sort of separation before.
Anise’s relationship with her younger cousins was adorable, and I liked how the book focused on the familial relationships not just between cousins, but between Anise and her aunt, and her dad. Lincoln was a great love interest, and I liked how even though he had a disability because he only had one arm, it never affected his personality or his character. It was simply a fact about him, not a defining characteristic. Having him show Anise the ropes with skateboarding was a cool way to bring his character in, as well as an awesome way to have Anise transition into life away from the water.
The title is so creative, because ‘Girl Out Of Water’ is figurative, because she’s being taken out of her natural environment, but also literal because she’s no longer able to surf!
Overall, I would recommend this book to anyone looking for a longer beach read this summer!
