[AUTHOR INTERVIEW] Interview with Kasie West, author of ‘Listen To Your Heart’!

I had the pleasure of interviewing Kasie West, who is the author of ‘Listen To Your Heart’ (as well as a ton of my other favorites)! Huge thanks to Kasie for answering all of my questions! You can check out my review of ‘Listen To Your Heart’ here, as well as my playlist for the book!

COURTNEY: What inspired you to write ‘Listen To Your Heart’, and how long did it take you to write the first draft?

KASIE: My husband has been into podcasts for a while now and he’s really turned me on to them. So I thought it would be fun to write a story around the idea of a reluctant podcast host.

COURTNEY: Which character changed the most from the first draft to the finished copy?

KASIE: I would say Frank changed the most from early drafts. He went through a couple iterations. I wasn’t sure exactly where I was going to land with him so he developed as the story did.

COURTNEY: If ‘Listen To Your Heart’ were to be adapted into a movie, who would be your fan cast for Kate, Alana, Diego, and Frank?  (Feel free to add any other character fan casts here too!)

KASIE: Let’s see, this question is always hard for me because I have specific pictures of my characters in my head and they are never anyone who actually exists. Ha. But it’s always fun to play, so here we go. For Kate, I’ll take Joey King. She’s a fun actress that I think would fit the role well. For Diego, how about another Diego? As in Diego Gonzalez Boneta. I know, I know, he’s like 27 or something, but he’s so cute! I’m super into Supernatural right now, so I need to pull someone from their cast, because I love them all. I’ll take Alexander Calvert for Frank (Another late 20s actor but he plays a 17 year old on Supernatural, I think he can pull it off). And lastly, I know she’s a surfer and not an actress, but can I have Kelia Moniz for Alana please? She’s so amazing.

COURTNEY: What (if anything) can you tell us about your next novel, “Fame, Fate, and the First Kiss”? (I can’t wait to read it!)

KASIE: Fame, Fate, and the First Kiss, is a companion novel to Love, Life and the List. We follow Lacey Barnes’ story. If you remember from LLL Lacey is an aspiring actress. So in FFF Lacey lands her first film role and has to navigate the life of a new film actress. Between an overprotective father, a straight-laced tutor, and some on set sabotage, it’s not as fun as she thought it would be. But even though Love isn’t in the script, she finds herself falling hard.

COURTNEY: Can you see yourself writing another book with any of the same characters from ‘Listen To Your Heart’? (Or having them pop up in your other books, like with ‘The Distance Between Us’ and ‘On The Fence’)

KASIE: I don’t have any companion novels planned for that one, but I’ll never rule them out. I’d love to explore Victoria’s story or Alana’s. It would be fun, that’s just not on the short list right now.

COURTNEY: Which scene was the hardest for you to write? (Or what about the book in general was hardest for you to write, if that’s easier to answer)

KASIE: It’s funny, I know there were scenes that were hard for me to write, but it’s like, once I move on to the next book or the next step of the process even, those scenes become a distant memory. I can tell you that some of my favorite scenes to write for this book were the podcast scenes. It was so fun to make up callers and what questions they might ask and how Kate and her co-host Victoria would respond to those. I really enjoyed writing a podcast apparently.

COURTNEY: Was there a scene that you absolutely loved that you had to end up cutting from the final draft?  If so, can you tell me anything about it?

KASIE: No, I’m actually a short writer. My first drafts are generally around 50k (and for reference they end up around 70k) so I’m always having to add scenes or flesh things out. I think I added an entire podcast session to the second draft.

COURTNEY: Is there anything else you’d like to add?

KASIE: Thanks for the questions! And thanks to my readers for being so supportive. The only reason I get to do what I do is because you keep reading my books and I appreciate it beyond words!

Thank you so much to Kasie for doing this interview! “Listen To Your Heart” is available now!
