Everything We Know About the New Hunger Games Prequel, Sunrise on the Reaping (So Far)

The more we learn about the new Hunger Games prequel, Sunrise on the Reaping, it feels like there are more questions than answers. With the number of weeks until the book’s release down to the single digits, here’s what we know so far:

What does the cover of Sunrise on the Reaping look like?

What is Sunrise on the Reaping about?

When you’ve been set up to lose everything you love, what is there left to fight for?

As the day dawns on the fiftieth annual Hunger Games, fear grips the districts of Panem. This year, in honor of the Quarter Quell, twice as many tributes will be taken from their homes.

Back in District 12, Haymitch Abernathy is trying not to think too hard about his chances. All he cares about is making it through the day and being with the girl he loves.

When Haymitch’s name is called, he can feel all his dreams break. He’s torn from his family and his love, shuttled to the Capitol with the three other District 12 tributes: a young friend who’s nearly a sister to him, a compulsive oddsmaker, and the most stuck-up girl in town. As the Games begin, Haymitch understands he’s been set up to fail. But there’s something in him that wants to fight . . . and have that fight reverberate far beyond the deadly arena.

When will Sunrise on the Reaping release?

The new Hunger Games prequel will release on March 18, 2025. It’s available for preorder now, wherever you buy your books! You can read an excerpt of Sunrise on the Reaping now.

When will the film adaptation of Sunrise on the Reaping be in theaters?

The film adaptation of Sunrise on the Reaping is set to release in theaters on November 20, 2026.

Who will portray Haymitch and the other tributes in Sunrise on the Reaping?

No casting news has been announced yet, but I’ll be sure to update as soon as we know something!

How will Sunrise on the Reaping be connected to the rest of the series?

Sunrise of the Reaping is set in between The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes (40 years after) and 26 years before the start of the main Hunger Games trilogy. We’re going to not only see the true events that get mentioned in the original series (Haymitch’s games) but will also learn more about President Snow’s reign, and will likely meet more characters that we’ve heard mentioned in passing by Katniss before, but never in detail.
