[ARC REVIEW] “Mr. Big Shot” By: R.S. Grey

R.S. Grey is back with another fun, witty rom com! “Mr. Big Shot” is available now!

What is “Mr. Big Shot” By R.S. Grey about?

While most little girls grow up idolizing Ariel or Belle, I was banging a plastic gavel and pretending to be Judge Judy. I spent my summers divorcing Barbie and Ken and splitting their Dreamhouse assets. Now, my goal to become the very best acquisitions lawyer at the top firm in Chicago is within reach.

I’m one month into my big-girl job at Elwood Hoyt, venti Starbucks in hand, ready to take on the day. The sleek elevator doors are about to close…then he steps in after me. Hudson Rhodes—the one senior partner I was told to avoid at all costs—just so happens to be the heartless villain I’m assigned to work under.

Ever since he found out who I am—the Scarlett Elwood—we’ve been enemies, the sort who constantly bicker and bark, take jabs in the boardroom, and occasionally pop up shirtless in each other’s steamy dreams. Y’know, that kind. He has to know I could run to my dad at any time and demand his firing, but his confident smirk says he knows I’d never give him the satisfaction.

The elevator chimes as we reach our floor, and I feel his broad shoulders pull even with mine. Fury mixes with fear, hatred with lust. He turns to briefly hold my gaze before confidently stepping out in front. His message is clear:

If I want to reach my goal, I’m going to have to go through him first.

Review:

I always enjoy R.S. Grey books, but I think this one has been my favorite since “Enemies Abroad”! Scarlett and Hudson were the perfect mix of enemies-to-lovers and forbidden romance (plus workplace romance)! I’d also definitely put this in the ‘he falls harder’ trope category, which is always a blast to read.

Romance aside, one of my favorite things about this book was the family dynamic — both Scarlett with her family, and Hudson with his. Oftentimes (and this isn’t necessarily a bad thing) when a book involves a family business that’s a giant fancy corporation, the parents value the business over the lives of and their relationships with their children, but that wasn’t the case here. Scarlett’s relationship with her dad, mom, and brothers was so sweet and supportive. Her dad didn’t really want her joining the family business, but he was still so proud of and supportive of her once she made her decision. Her brother Barrett and his husband Nyles also had a great dynamic with Scarlett, and it was so fun whenever they got to interact. Hudson had a great relationship with his mom and sister (and his niece and nephew) too, and it was so fun to see a different side of him with his family than he shows at work.

I’ve gone back and forth about whether or not I consider this is slow burn. It sort of is, and it sort of isn’t, so you’ll have to read the book to decide for yourself! As with all of Rachel’s books, I love love LOVE the witty banter between Scarlett and Hudson, and I also absolutely adore their inner dialogues. The amount of times I read a line out loud to my sister like “this would be me fr” are too many times to count. Rachel’s books are always a fun read, and I can’t wait for whatever comes next!

As with all new adult/adult romance books I review on here, I recommend this book for readers who are 18+ — but don’t let me tell you what to do!

Thanks so much to Rachel and her team for providing me with an ARC to read in exchange for an honest review! The book is available now!
