Review:
Rebecca Jenshak’s Campus Wallflowers series is one of my favorites, and I’m so excited that Dahlia and Felix’s story has finally arrived! We met them in previous books, but got to know Felix better in the novellas starring his twin sisters, Holly and Stella, so I’ve been excitedly awaiting for his love story, and this fake dating football sports romance did not disappoint!
Although you can read this book as a standalone, I highly recommending reading the other books in the series, since all of the characters appear in this one! (Daisy and Jordan from “Tutoring the Player,” Violet and Gavin from “Hating the Player,” Stella and Beau from “Sneaking Around with the Player,” and Holly and Teddy from “Snowed in with the Player”) Felix is also a prominent character in Stella and Holly’s stories, as they’re his younger twin sisters.
After a video of Dahlia talking to her best friend Jane about Felix gets spread around the Valley U campus, Felix proposes that the two of them fake date for a while to get his ex girlfriend off his back, and to prevent all of campus from making fun of Dahlia for the video. (Also so that Dahlia can break out of her shell a bit and meet more people, but the other two reasons were more of a driving force.) As with all fake dating romances, the fake part gets blurry pretty fast, especially considering both of them liked each other before their whole arrangement started. Dahlia has basically zero dating experience, or any of the other experiences that come along with that, whereas Felix…definitely does. This impacts their dynamic in a few different ways, but not necessarily in a negative way. There’s a sort of power dynamic in that he’s more popular and more experienced, but Dahlia is powerful in her own way.
We see a bit of a continuation of a storyline from the previous book, “Hating the Player,” with Dahlia’s designing career. Jane’s story (which we’ll see next in “Tempting the Player”) is first hinted at in there as well, and i’s set up even more in Dahlia’s book. The celebrity that Dahlia designs an item of clothing for is definitely one that I’d love to read a spin off love story on.
Overall, this was a great addition to the series — I love their whole friend group, so getting to see them all interact together was so much fun. It would’ve been nice if we could’ve seen some interactions between Felix and Stella’s boyfriend, Beau, in-person when their teams played each other, but we did get a few FaceTime interactions. This is a series that I’ll always recommend. As for all new adult romance books, I recommend it for 18+ due to the sexual content, but as always, don’t let me tell you what to do.
Thanks to Rebecca Jenshak and Valentine PR for providing me with an early copy in exchange for an honest review! The book is available now!
